The databases aren't really the best place to start for general history questions such as this.  Books are much better.  I found several books on the history of Italy on our library shelves (call number area DG 467).  These books go through the history of Italy chronoligically and have chapters that cover the time period you are seeking.  A couple of these books are:  The Oxford History of Italy and The History of Italy.  Once you've learned something about what was going on in Italy during this time period from the books, a librarian may be able to help you craft database searches with more specific search terms based on the leaders, movements, wars, etc. that may have been going on at that time.
